Pancake Day: Healthier Alternatives To Top Your Pancakes
It’s Pancake Day! Pancakes for breakfast, pancakes for lunch, whenever you decide to have them make sure you enjoy every bite. We all love the sugar and lemon combo, or more-ish Nutella and banana mix, but if you wanted to go for something a bit healthier, here are some nutritious alternatives.
- Dark Chocolate
This pancake day swap your Nutella (other chocolate spread available) for some melted dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is richer, has fewer additives and is generally healthier than milk chocolate. It also works well with the usual fruit toppings – strawberry, banana, raspberry etc.
- Sugar, ahh honey honey
Use honey instead of shop-bought sugar. It goes well with walnuts and a range of fruits and it’s also a great alternative to maple syrup. Make sure the honey isn’t overly processed and contains as fewer additives as possible.
- Something savoury?
Who says pancakes can only be a sweet treat? Savoury pancakes are generally accompanied by cheese or bacon. Why not swap the greasy pork bacon for leaner, low-fat turkey bacon? Or bake some vegetables and wrap them up in the pancake to make a burrito. Perfect for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
- Avocado
“Avocado again?” we hear you ask? We know, everyone is banging on about it, but this list wouldn’t be complete without it. You could have it with a lean-cut of turkey bacon, or make good guacamole with some lime juice, red onion and fresh chilli – topped with a poached egg.
- Cheesus, that’s a great pancake topping
You can have a variety of cheeses on your pancakes but try to keep it light and bright. Maybe try some feta, baby tomatoes, pomegranate, spring onion and salad leaves?
